Before The Fall

The dissolution of Communism in Yugoslavia resulted from the fragmentation that existed among the Croatian, Serbian, and Slovenian groups. Most of the politics of this revolutionary period dealt less with introducing democratic principles that in did with the separate republics within Yugoslavia seeking their full independence. By 1990, Serbia, Slovenia, and Croatia had each adopted their own constitution, but discussions on how the federal structure could incorporate them were not far-reaching. (Crampton, 1997, 400-403)

After The Fall

By April 1992, the Yugoslav federation was largely diminished, now consisting only of the republics of Serbia and Montenegro. They both elected communist parliaments and presidents. Not many reforms were introduced in the following years because the lowered status of the Yugoslavian state following the independents of most of its republics. (Crampton, 1997, 456-458)
